3. Dream Chasing. Grass Land.

With the population less than 3 million and the most sparsely populated independent country in the world, It is also the world's second-largest landlocked country after Kazakhstan. Mountains to the north and west and the Gobi Desert to the south. Approximately 30% of the population are nomadic or semi-nomadic. The predominant religion in Mongolia is Tibetan Buddhism, and the majority of the state's citizens are of the Mongol ethnicity, though Kazakhs, Tuvans, and other minorities also live in the country, especially in the west. About 20% of the population live on less than US$1.25 per day! Mongolia joined the World Trade Organization in 1997 and seeks to expand its participation in regional economic and trade regimes. Geography of Mongolia is varied, with the Gobi Desert to the south and with cold and mountainous regions to the north and west. The highest point in Mongolia is the Khuiten Peak in the Tavan bogd massif in the far west at 4,374 m (14,350 ft). Most of the country is hot in the summer and extremely cold in the winter, with January averages dropping as low as −30 °C.The country is also subject to occasional harsh climatic conditions known as zud. Ulaanbaatar has the lowest average temperature of any national capital in the world. Mongolia is high, cold, and windy. It has an extreme continental climate with long, coldwinters and short summers, during which most of its annual precipitation falls. The country averages 257 cloudless days a year, and it is usually at the center of a region of high atmospheric pressure. Precipitation is highest in the north and lowest in the south. Huge grass land outside UB is what we are looking forward to. Breath taking and dream catching! Everyone are so excited, especially Adam. Chasing dream of animals. It took us six days to central Mongolia reaching The Great White Lake (Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur). A long the way, we stop over Mongol Els, Kharkhorin and Tsetserleg. The more people sharing the ride the cheaper you get. It cost us USD50 per person, per day for driver guide, food, gas and ger camp stay. Sleeping bag are provided if required. Our driver Gamba has been driving about 10 years, he speak simple english, mongolian and russian language and age 50. According to him not many young ones learn to speak russian now.

The more we drive the more "empty" it was. Blue sky and Mountain. We stop many times a long the drive as children are excited with yaks, horses and chasing sheep too. This also the time that the camera in countless shot taking, basically our photographer she did most the screaming beside the children. Ha! Given the climate and agriculture here, fruits and vegetables are expensive. Most of the time cold here and the extremely cold in winter, meat and noodles are commonalty taken. Vegetarian could face difficulty.
Mongol Els. "Mini Gobi" It also called. Just before we reach the next destination Kharkhorin. This was our second desert experience after The Thar desert in Rajastan back in India. Children and us had a great time experience the a different between them. It was much more colder and those camels looks more prettier :) There was family staying here and they provide the camel riding for tourist and of cause was paid, inclusive in our charges from the guest house. Of cause we can save quite a sum from this during all the travel but we both understand that this is one of the learning during our travels.

I love this picture very much. Thanks to my lovely photographer wife.

Camel riding is pain in the ass, we decided to walk.
Kids love it and went for a short one.

MONGOLIA Where Dreams Begins

2. Ulaanbaatar -The Capital.

It was the month of May, beginning of the Summer and still cold. It might be the coolest capital on earth. We were here three times, first on the arrival staying at LG guest house and preparing the first 6 days outskirts visiting The White Lake. Second time was busy with hospital and prepare for Gobi Desert. And Third was to back to Incheon S.Korea.
You can't really get lost here, Peave Avenue is the main street. Big building, Towers, Business Centre all here. You may feel like in Russia cause of many old building structure. The main challenge we had was the language. Most of the time they speak mongolian to us. Probably of our skin color and looks like them. Really not many speak english. We had a hard time searching for hospital and communicate with the doctors. When she broke her arm fell down from horse riding in white lake, and that time we were 800km away.
UB guest house runs by Mr. Kim and Bobby the wife. The husband handle the guest house and wife take care of all tour arrangement. They are well known and recommended in the lonely planet. Most travelers engage with agency or guest house for outskirts. Mongolia is a big, huge grass land, almost 5 times of our country Malaysia and with population less than 5 mil. It is quite impossible to travel by yourself unless you are equipped and got time to get lost and plenty of food to survive in the middle of no where.

Museum most of the time not in our list but the Natural History Museum here I think is the only museum you get to see dinosaur (bone...) Entry fees for audult T2500 about RM7 and children are free! Camera fee T5000 about RM14 but no photo on dinosaur. But guess what...

1. Dream and Reality.
India, Mongolia, Tibet, Nepal & Siberian Train are on top of the list we most look forward.

This is the second country we visit just after India. In fact it was just about 3 months time gap in between. Why such a rush? Just after the India trip, sadly there were some friends died at young age. Age around just like us! This trigger us, life is short!

We both had a serious discussion, let's do it! For us. For the kids.
Of cause we still have to face the reality facts. Money. Since children are home schooling which already cut down some expenses, what next? We decided to sell what we can. Airfare mostly causes the first problem, we would love to go in by Siberian Train but given the time we had for this trip. After search and search and compare, we engage with Korean Airline which able to give us lowest price we can get a long with a 6 days transit gap for us to be in South Korea. One ticket, two countries. Deal.

We leave home early morning at 7.30 to KL that day. Then to S.Korea - Incheon. Flight to Mongolia from Incheon Airport at 6pm and 10.30pm, Chinggis Khaan Int Airport! Touch Down! We engage with LG guest house for the first and second night. Is Clean and reasonable price. Considering our arrived time, a pickup from the guest house would do lot better. Until settle down already 3am. Who cares? you have all the time in the world when travel. Right?

And I must say, when the next sun rise, she get up early then me and this happen less than 10 times in our decade marriage :P
